Shazam of Fashion

You're scrolling through your Instagram feed and see your friend or a celebrity wearing that perfect outfit. And you say to yourself: I wish there was a way to find out where I could get those clothes and buy the same ones.

Thanks to the Shazam of fashion, you can upload any photo, from a screenshot to an instant capture of a fashion look, and it will instantly offer you to purchase the clothes or similar ones. This app will propose you both new and used clothes through an intelligent online marketplace.

Shazam of Fashion will use computer vision and deep learning to identify apparel pieces in a photo. To create this app and the AI, we're going to use ml5.js which is a JavaScript library. It's a tool that any person interested in AI can use, because it is beginner-friendly. We will need the ml5 website because they have a function called imageClassifier, which is going to help us classify clothes. Indeed, our app, with the help of the AI, will be able to identify the image displayed and the clothes contained in it.

Use Shazam of Fashion, and it will feel like having the one and only fashion editor, Derek Blasberg, in your pocket to help you shop. The app will be able to detect different styles, shapes and patterns. We will also be using the library p5.js that will allow us to drop directly the screenshot of the outfit from Instagram on the website, and also take a picture instantly. Therefore it is faster and more convenient to shop after finding the perfect outfit online.

Value creation for different players of the industry : For the traditional consumers, the value comes from being able to identify clothing items they want / being able to find the best prices for similar clothes. Moreover, consumers who aren’t willing to pay high prices for new clothes now have access to a used clothing marketplace and in general many references with a wide range of prices for those products. Finally, the clothing brands will find value because it gives exposure to their products.

Clothing companies could also use the real time data to see what kinds of styles are preferred over others. Therefore data and AI could both have an important goal. Clothing brands would also possess the equivalent of their products on the market. This would enable them to communicate their own strategies such as differentiation or price reduction more easily to customers through comparison with other retail businesses.
